Researchers from top Indian institutes say that the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of Indian strains of Covid-19 virus with roots in China was in circulation as early as November 2019. Using a scientific technique called “time to most recent common ancestor”, MRCA, scientists estimated the viral strain now circulating in Telangana and other states had originated between November 26 and December 25. However, it is not clear if the virus had already made its presence felt in India during that time, as no tests were carried out prior to January.
