Assam on Thursday witnessed biggest single-day spike as 285 new coronavirus cases were detected in the state in the last 24 hours.

With the new coronavirus cases, the state tally has now surged to 2,115.

Out of the new cases, 79 cases have been reported from Hojai district while 45 from Dhubri, 36 from Udalguri, 24 from Barpeta, 21 from Tinsukia, 16 from Kamrup, 15 from Lakhimpur, 14 each from Dima Hasao and Dhemaji, 10 from Nagaon, five from Morigaon, four each from Darrang, Bongaigaon, three each from Kamrup (Rural), Nalbari, Goalpara, two each from Baksa, Golaghat and Jorhat district.

Assam Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said 285 positive cases for Covid-19 detected in the state on Thursday.

“42 new cases of #COVID19+. 38 Dhubri, 4 Darrang. Total cases 2115, Recovered 459, Active cases 1649, Deaths 04. Update 11:15 PM /June 4/Day’s total 285,” Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the state had registered 269 positive cases for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, a man who was lodged at Guwahati central jail in a theft case had tested positive for Covid-19.

Confirming the report, Guwahati city police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said the man was arrested by Dispur police on June 1 in a theft case and police sent him to jail. He was tested positive for Covid-19 on thursday.

Later, the Covid-19 patient was shifted to hospital from the jail.

It is the first coronavirus case detected inside prison in the state.
